Originally built in 1939 by the acclaimed early 20th century architect Roscoe Hemenway, the Burton House once served as the residence of celebrated artist / illustrator, Verne Tossey, widely recognized for his realistic fiction Western book covers in the 1950s and ’60s. In 2017, the home was masterfully reimagined with a meticulous renovation, through the creative vision of Portland designer Benjamin Silver and builder Oliver Olson, transforming Hemenway’s design for modern living.
“When approaching the project, I asked myself what Roscoe Hemenway might create if he were designing today,” Silver explains. “He wouldn’t be putting in a tiny kitchen or closing off rooms—he was a forward thinker. He’d want to open things up.” While the home’s new layout doesn’t precisely mirror the original, it takes clear inspiration from Hemenway’s architectural sensibilities.

Silver and Olson blended refined elements of modern British design with clean, contemporary style. Every component of the renovation was executed with thoughtful intent, resulting in a home where architectural detail, functional form, and the natural environment exist in balance.
Vertical cedar and a metal standing seam roof clad the simple and refined exterior and a paver block drive leads to the home. A dramatic transformation raised and vaulted the living room ceiling, centered the picture window and added new French doors to patios on either side. The dining room entry was expanded connecting the living and dining rooms and the galley kitchen was opened to the dining room, connecting the spaces and adding square footage to the original footprint, including room for a grand staircase to the lower level. Now, bright natural light now bounces throughout and between all of the spaces. A second patio, accessible from the living room, was added to further enhance indoor-outdoor living.

The connected kitchen and dining room yielded a unified space with improved flow. One end now features French doors that open to an exterior patio, while the other showcases floor-to-ceiling built-in shelves, offering both style and storage and removing the need for additional furniture. Designed with the culinary enthusiast in mind, the chef’s kitchen includes gourmet finishes and thoughtful details. A Sub-Zero refrigerator houses integrated wine storage and a dedicated space for a cigar humidor. Silver selected Pental Quartz for the countertops for durability and performance, complemented by marble on the backsplash creating a light-filled kitchen that feels both functional and refined.

The primary bedroom also received vaulted ceilings and its own set of French doors opening to the patio. A sleek ensuite bathroom was added, modernizing the space for today’s lifestyle.
Down the stairwell, a new picture window brings natural light into the den. Adjacent to it, a studio and custom wine cellar were installed—complete with a minimalist wall-mounted wine rack from Stact.
